Our Commitment to Privacy
Constellations is designed with privacy in mind. We do not collect, store, or share any personal information about our users. This privacy policy explains what data the extension accesses and how it is used.
Information We Do NOT Collect
We do not collect:
- Personal identification information (name, email, address, etc.)
- Browsing history or activity
- Demographic information
- Cookies for tracking purposes
- Any personally identifiable information (PII)
Data the Extension Accesses
To provide its core functionality, the Constellations extension accesses:
Wikipedia Content
The extension reads public Wikipedia article content to extract entity names and generate knowledge graphs. This is done in real-time and no personal data is involved.
Active Tab Permission
Used to read the current Wikipedia page title when you use the right-click context menu to explore connections. This allows you to start exploring from any article without manual input.
Data Storage
Local Storage (On Your Device)
The extension stores the following data locally on your device using Chrome's storage API:
- User Preferences: Your graph layout settings, theme preferences, and display options
- Saved Graphs: Graphs you explicitly choose to save for later viewing
This data never leaves your device and is stored solely for your convenience. You can clear this data at any time through Chrome's extension settings or by using the extension's clear/reset functions.
Server-Side Caching
To improve performance and reduce API costs, our backend server caches:
- Graph Responses: AI-generated graph data for common queries
- Image URLs: Links to Wikipedia/Wikimedia images
- Entity Information: Public data about people, events, and concepts from Wikipedia
This cached data is anonymous and contains no personally identifiable information. It is derived entirely from public sources (Wikipedia, Wikidata, academic databases).
Network Communications
The extension communicates with:
- Wikipedia/Wikimedia: To read article content and retrieve images
- Constellations Backend API: To generate knowledge graphs using AI
- Google AI (Gemini): For entity classification and graph generation (via our backend)
All communications are for functional purposes only - generating graphs and retrieving public information. No user tracking or analytics are performed.
Third-Party Services
The extension uses the following third-party services:
- Google Gemini AI: For natural language processing and graph generation
- Wikipedia API: For article content and metadata
- Wikimedia Commons: For images
These services are used strictly for providing the core functionality of Constellations. We do not share any personal data with these services.
Permissions Explained
The extension requests the following permissions:
- activeTab: To read the current Wikipedia page title for quick exploration
- contextMenus: To add a right-click option on Wikipedia pages
- sidePanel: To display the graph in Chrome's side panel
- storage: To save your preferences and graphs locally
- Host permissions (wikipedia.org, wikimedia.org, backend): To access public content and generate graphs
Data Security
All network communications use HTTPS encryption. Data stored locally is protected by Chrome's security mechanisms. Server-side cached data contains only public information with no user identifiers.
Children's Privacy
Constellations does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. The extension is designed for general educational and research use.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
